About Me

Known by collectors for creating paintings of painterly realism, reminiscent of early European impressionists, Deborah Haeffele took a radical step towards embracing a more contemporary ethos. Using years of experience with oil, she now combines oil with cold wax, metallic oil, oil pastel, and metal leaf over an acrylic base. Palette knife and brush over paint applied with a roller creates layers of depth and texture using translucency against the reflectiveness of metal resulting in paintings that are highly reactive with changing incident light.
Thick layers are incised with various tools to carve elements into the paint. Drawing tools reveal a quick gestural element. Final layers of details with paint and marker make the paintings intriguing viewed up close as well from across the room.
With a long career in the artistic world, Haeffele’s paintings have been featured in Art Business News, Artist Magazine, Southwest Magazine, the American Library Journal, and Smithsonian Magazine. A published illustrator, her book artwork has been included on such noteworthy list as the Bank Street College list, the Society of Illustrators, and the National Bookseller’s List.
Her work is included into a diverse assortment of corporate and private collections including Clos La Chance Winery, Cranbrook Institute, SAS Institute, Glaxo Wellcome, Kaiser Permanente, General Electric, Mecklenburg County and Wake County, NC.
She has exhibited at the NC Museum of Art, the Charach Epstein Museum, Michigan, and the Society of Illustrators, N.Y. She has been published by over ten major publishers including EP Dutton, Penguin, Scholastic, Simon & Schuster, Algonquin, Scribner & Sons, Farrar Straus & Giroux, Bentley House, and more.
Ms. Haeffele has a Master’ degree in design from N.C. State University’s School of Design and a B.A. from UNC, Chapel Hill.
Art Business News said that her paintings “emphasize color and light which help create an interesting marriage of line and fluidity. In a Monterey Herald feature, Carmel gallery owner Art Pitzer describes her artwork as “painterly, combining technical merit and aesthetic appeal.using mixed media.
